Understanding and Calculating Artificial Grass Yarn

The higher the Dtex of a single grass filament, the thicker or wider the grass filament will be, which means better standing ability and increased wear resistance, so basically it will look better for longer.

For example our Real Lux 30mm grass has a dtex of 14,400 and has 8 straight Polyethylene yarns and 8 curled PE yarns. So to work out the individual yarn dtex you divide the total dtex by the number of yarns.
So each yarn has a dtex of 900. As the curled yarns are a high dtex PE, this helps with softness and recovery.

A lot of grasses use a Polypropylene (PP) yarn for the curled yarns as this is cheaper, but doesn’t offer the same recovery or softness as PE. Also you tend to find the curled yarns are a much lower dtex to the straight, so they offer very little recovery and stability to the straight yarns.

A competitors 30mm artificial grass has a dtex of just 4,500 and has 16 straight PE yarns and 16 curled PP yarns. Here the straight yarns are twice as thick as the curled yarns so you have 3,000 dtex divided by 16 and 1,500 divided by 16. You may be thinking wow it has twice as many yarns per tuft but when you work out the invidual dtex you realise it is a much inferior product, with very little stability or recovery.
The straight yarns have a individual dtex of 188 and the curled yarns 94!

So the straight yarns are more than 4 times finer on the competitions than ours.

The curled yarns are nearly 10 times finer and are also cheaper polypropylene, so they will offer very little stability to the straight yarns and will crush very easily.
